How to manage Stress at the Workplace

What is stress? It is a “state of mental or emotional strain resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.” We experience stress when things are out of our control and managing stress has become vital for all individuals to lead a happy and healthy life. Identifying the source of stress to an extent can help one to find solutions for the same. At work an individual can be stressed due to reasons such as  work pressure, deadlines, employee-employer relationship etc. Identifying the source becomes important. Reasons and effects of stress differ from person to person. It may affect a person both physically as well as mentally. Stress management plays an important role to help one alleviate stress. These days we have lot of stress management programs being conducted by various corporates for the betterment of their employees in this regard. Regular Exercise

Exercise is an important factor for leading a healthy life. Regular exercise must be added to your daily routine of activities. Exercises which require moving both your arms and legs are very effective for relieving stress. While doing the exercise it is important to focus your attention on the physical activity which would help you break your negative thoughts that may lead to stress. Sitting at your desk, you can do stretches that would relieve your sore muscles formed due to excessive stress that one may not be consciously aware of. Take out some time out of your work to move around, talk to colleagues and do some exercises moving both your arms and legs. This would definitely help you get rid of your stress to a great extent.

Deep Breathing

One of the best stress reduction technique is to practice deep breathing. It is something that we do all day long, but we do not pay attention to it. People working on computers, if one notices, is not at all aware of their breathing and also due to the concentration in their work inhales after long pauses. Deep breathing increases the supply of oxygen to the brain and helps to calm one’s mind. Moreover, breathing helps you focus on your body which can quiet your mind and reduce unwanted thoughts. Diaphragmatic breathing is a simple way to relieve stress, lower your heart rate and blood pressure, and leaves you energised to carry on with your day. Deep and shallow breathing is one of the breathing techniques – Place one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. Keeping your chest still take deep breaths where your stomach goes in and out slowly. Repeat this 6 to 8 times and this can help you loosen up your muscles and in turn helps relieve your stress.

Effective Communication

Communicating effectively at work can improve the employer-employee relationship and improve teamwork which leads to better decision making and problem solving.To have effective communication one needs to be a good listener which means one needs to understand not only the words of information but also the emotions the spearker is trying to communicate. By doing this it helps both the employer and employee to reduce stress for themselves and also build a good relationship with each other. Cultivating a friendly and healthy relation with people around you can help reduce stress effectively. This is very important at the workplace as one would need to have daily interactions with their employers and colleagues. The thought of having someone to go to when you are faced with a problem relieves you of a great deal of stress.

Meditation

Meditation is one of the tools for relaxation and stress reduction. Corporates, these days, conduct lots of wellness programs for employees, in which meditation tops the list. Meditation can bring about a balanced mind with more constructive thoughts. There are a variety of forms of meditation that one can follow, transcendental, Chakra etc. Imbibing meditation into your everyday life is the key to a balanced Mind-Body-Soul.
